What to know
Choosing dark oak
Real oak top layer
Every design has a real oak top layer of 3mm to 6mm over a stable engineered core, from 10mm to 20mm thick in total. The top layer can be sanded and refinished, and the thicker it is, the more times that can be done.
Where it suits
Engineered oak suits living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways and home offices, and works in kitchens with sensible care. It is water-resistant rather than waterproof, so for bathrooms choose GF Glue Down LVT or GF Click SPC.
Fitting
GF herringbone and plank can be glued down or nailed, and Versailles panels are glued down, with a 10–12mm expansion gap at the walls. Use a competent professional fitter and follow the GF installation guide to keep the guarantee.
Questions
Dark oak flooring, answered
Is engineered wood waterproof?
No. It is real oak, so it is water-resistant rather than waterproof. Wipe up spills promptly. It works well in kitchens with sensible care, but for bathrooms and utility rooms choose GF Glue Down LVT or GF Click SPC.
Can it go over underfloor heating?
Yes. It is suitable for underfloor heating, water or electric, up to a floor surface temperature of 27°C.
How is it fitted?
GF herringbone and plank can be glued down or nailed, and Versailles panels are glued down, always with a 10–12mm expansion gap at the walls. Herringbone is laid from the centre of the room and is never floated. To keep the GF guarantee, follow the GF installation guide and use a competent professional fitter.
Can it be sanded?
Yes. The real oak top layer can be sanded and refinished. The thicker the top layer, the more times that can be done, so a 4mm or 6mm top layer gives you more life than 3mm.
Can I order free samples?
Yes. You can order up to five free samples, sent within 3–5 days, so you can see the colours in your own home before you order.
